Kandaleru Reservoir

Kandaleru reservoir is the world second biggest mud bank reservoir. It was launched by the then chief minister Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao in 1983.The main aim of constructing this reservoir is to store water for drinking and cultivation. It is one of the four such constructions taken up under the Telugu Ganga Project (TGP).

Nearly, twenty seven villages have been evacuated in the process of acquiring land for it. The government has provided adequate rehabilitation and compensation to the affected families. Most of them have settled in Nellore

The work has started with the help of the government of Tamilnadu on agreement that 3TMCs of the store water will be supplied per year to cater to the drinking needs of Madras (then). The cost of construction has been estimated to be 156 crores. It called for tenders and supplied technical staff. The construction was completed in 1997. They used nearly 162 lakh cubic meters in building the bank of this reservoir.

The total length of the bank is 10.752 kms, with 6mts.width. The maximum water level is 86mts with 35.69TMC storage capacity.

Water flows into this reservoir through Somasila link channel traveling nearly 45kms. Water is released to Chennai (now) through the five gates towards south, where government has plans to construct a power plant. This has 10 to 15 sub channels. Excess water that fills the reservoir from rains overflows north gate, to which construction is undertaken to improve the reservoir storage capacity.
